Description of Whisky Jug I

A rustic icon of Americana! Here’s a quote I found on the reason for putting x’s on whisky jugs.

“Whiskey jugs were actually ceramic bottles for packaging cider or just plain water. Bootleggers would use the discarded ceramic container to package their product. The X was something of a warning on the bottle to let the consumer know that they were not drinking water or cider. Those ceramic containers were easily found because of their legitimate uses. The multiple XXX’s are probably just a motion picture way of driving the point across on film.”
